Kentucky Log a Load for Kids: Building a Healthier Future for Kentucky’s Children

Since 1997, Kentucky’s forest industry has proudly raised more than $1 million for Kentucky Children’s Hospital through the Kentucky Log a Load for Kids program.

What began as a commitment to improve children’s health across the Commonwealth has grown into a legacy of support for treatment, research, education, and expanded access to care.

Recently, the Kentucky Log a Load for Kids Committee fulfilled a five-year, $100,000 commitment to support the Kentucky Children’s Hospital Mobile Clinic. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, those funds were raised in less than five years. This investment has a direct impact on rural communities across Kentucky. One in four children in Kentucky does not have access to a pediatrician in their home county. The Mobile Clinic travels to underserved areas, delivering essential medical care to children who might otherwise go without treatment.

But the need does not stop there.

Golisano Children’s at UK – Richmond Road Children have complex and distinct medical needs, and the care provided by Kentucky Children’s Hospital extends far beyond saving lives within hospital walls.

As demand for specialty services continues to grow, so does our responsibility to meet that need.

The new Golisano Children’s at UK – Richmond Road clinic was created to provide easier access to multispecialty care in three critical areas:

  • Developmental Pediatrics - Serving children with autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, and developmental or behavioral challenges associated with complex medical conditions.
  • NICU Graduate Clinic - Providing specialized follow-up care for premature infants who have left the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit but still require expert monitoring and treatment.
  • Complex Care - Supporting children with chronic lung disease, genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, or Trisomy 18, as well as Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida.
  • Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation services allow families to receive coordinated therapy and medical care in one convenient location, eliminating the burden of traveling between multiple sites.

In 2021, nearly 6,000 children received this care in crowded spaces on the UK HealthCare campus. Today, these children are served in a spacious, purpose-built clinic designed specifically for their sensory, developmental, and medical needs with improved accessibility and comprehensive care under one roof.

A Legacy of Impact - Over the years, Log a Load for Kids funds have supported:

  • The Child Life Program
  • Two “trees” in the Treehouse Playroom
  • Two research endowments
  • Murals in the hospital and pediatric outpatient clinics
  • MRI goggles that help children remain calm during procedures

And now, expanded outreach and specialty services that bring care closer to home.

As we look toward our next pledge, we invite you to continue partnering with us. Growing demand and financial headwinds make community support more important than ever.

The Kentucky Log a Load for Kids program is a volunteer-led, statewide effort, and 100 percent of the funds raised go directly to Golisano Children’s at UK in Lexington.

Together, we are investing in Kentucky’s most valuable resource — our children — ensuring they receive the expert, compassionate care they deserve, wherever they live.

THANK YOU VIDEO FROM KENTUCKY CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

The Kentucky “Log A Load for Kids” program is a volunteer led statewide effort to raise money to improve children’s health through treatment, research, and education. One hundred percent of the money raised by Log-A-Load goes to the Golisano Children at Kentucky (formerly Kentucky Children’s Hospital) in Lexington.

Since 1997 Kentucky’s forest industry has raised over $1Million. This money has supported the “Child Life” area in the hospital, two “trees” in the Treehouse Playroom, two research endowments and goggles that are wore during MRI’s to help children remain calm.

We completed our last pledge to support the Pediatric Mobile Clinic (see attached) in July 2025.  One in four kids in Kentucky does not have a pediatrician in their home county. This clinic will travel to areas of the state that lack the resources needed to treat children.

October is the traditional month that we raise funds. Funds can be raised by donating the value of any wood product to Log a Load. This can be the value of a log, a load of pulpwood or chips, ties, or bourbon barrels, or any other forest product. No amount is too small and is tax-deductible. If your company would like to have a Log- A- Load fundraiser, please contact the KFIA office.
