“Working Together for Tomorrow”

The Kentucky Forest Industries Association (KFIA) recently completed a successful 53rd Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky at the Brown Hotel.  The meeting was held April 10-12, 2018 and was well attended by over 375 members and 46 exhibitors.  The KFIA Annual Meeting serves as the premier event for the hardwood industry in Kentucky.  The meeting got underway with a day of golf with 62 participants weathering the cool, breezy day.

Wednesday started with the Board of Directors taking care of association business and was followed by the KFIA/Tree Farm Awards Luncheon.  The luncheon provided an opportunity to   honor a wide range of individuals that help to make forestry and the wood industry a big success throughout the state.  The following people were also recognized for their contributions to forestry in Kentucky:
Clifton Taylor, Danville, KY – 2017 Tree Farmer of the Year
Rodgers Logging, Hanson, KY – 2017 Logger of the Year
Lisa Armstrong, Central Region KY Division of Forestry,
Campbellsville, KY- 2017 Inspector of the Year

KFIA recognized the following people for their leadership and   service to the KFIA Board of Directors:
Bill Boarman, Young Manufacturing Co., Beaver Dam, KY
Garry Jones, T & G Lumber Co., Park City, KY

Several meetings held throughout the second day discussed ways to restructure your business to improve financial return, Statewide Wood Energy Program development and related projects and a breakout session on how to maintain a modern sawmill.  As usual tradition, everyone enjoyed the Robinson Lumber Co. / Van Meter Insurance Hospitality Suite with great fellowship and networking   opportunities.  This year the tradition continued with all types of seafood from New Orleans and also   included a bourbon tasting hosted by Heaven Hill Distillery.  The day ended with the Exhibitor Reception which included the announcement of the golf winners and plenty of time to see some of the latest technology and services being      offered to the wood industry.

Thursday morning opened with a legislative and association update provided by KFIA Executive Director Bob Bauer followed by Dana Lee Cole who updated Hardwood Federation issues in Washington DC and the impact on the timber industry.  Representatives from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet gave an outlook for the industry along with issues facing the Division of Forestry and Judd     Johnson from the Hardwood Market    Report gave an excellent presentation on hardwood markets and figures on log exports and how the industry is being affected.  The final speakers were Commissioner Greg Johnson and biologist Zak Danks with the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources who discussed a wide range of potential partnerships for working together to manage our forests and wildlife habitat.  The meeting concluded with an update on the National White Oak Initiative provided by University of Kentucky Department Chairman Jeff Stringer.

The meeting was a tremendous success and those in attendance gained valuable information while having time to network with others in the hardwood industry from throughout the country.  KFIA is pleased to announce that the 2019 Annual Meeting will be in Lexington, KY at the Embassy Suites on April 2-4.
