2016 Kentucky Forest Industries Association Annual Meeting

“Restoring our Forests and Markets”

     The Kentucky Forest Industries Association (KFIA) recently completed a successful 51st Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky at the Brown Hotel.  The meeting was held April 5-7, 2016 and was well attended by over 350 members.  The KFIA Annual Meeting serves as the premier event for the hardwood industry in Kentucky and got underway with a great day of golf with 70 participants. 

      Wednesday started with the Board of Directors taking care of association business and was followed by the KFIA/Tree Farm Awards Luncheon.  The luncheon provided an opportunity to honor a wide range of individuals that help to make forestry and the wood industry a big success throughout the state.  Guest speaker Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles gave an update on his plans for the Department of Agriculture and the involvement of the forest products industry.  The following people were also recognized for their contributions to forestry in Kentucky:

Herbert C. Davis, Dunnville, KY – 2015 Tree Farmer of the Year

Sutton Logging, Fredonia, KY – 2015 Logger of the Year

Tammy Rogers, Central Region KY Division of Forestry, Campbellsville, KY- 2015 Inspector of the Year

Lawrence (Larry) Lowe, Retired KY Division of Forestry, Frankfort, KY – 2015 Communicator of the Year

Lloyd Foe, Consulting Forester – Outgoing Tree Farm Chairman

 

KFIA recognized the following people for their leadership and service to the KFIA Board of Directors:

     The afternoon meeting discussed Sustainable Forestry Implementation in Kentucky.  As usual tradition, everyone enjoyed the Robinson Lumber/ Van Meter Insurance Hospitality Suite with great seafood and special cuisine straight from New Orleans.  The day concluded with the Exhibitor Reception and plenty of time to see some of the latest technology and services being offered to the wood industry.   

      Thursday morning opened with Kentucky Lt. Governor Jenean Hampton discussing her wood industry background and support for the industry followed by a legislative and association update by KFIA Executive Director Bob Bauer.  Other conference speakers were Rex Mann, Director, American Chestnut Foundation discussing the restoration of the American chestnut tree and Dana Cole providing an update on Harwood Federation issues. (Click on link to view)    Bill Luppold, Economist, US Forest Service gave an update on the white oak markets and what to expect in the future. (Click on link to view)  Bill Parsons, Woodworks – Wood Products Council discussed the emerging market for tall timber buildings and cross laminated timber technology followed by Professor Jeff Stringer, UK Department of Forestry updating those in attendance on the UK Forest Health and Research Center and new changes to BMPs for logging activities.       (click on link to view)

     The meeting was a tremendous success and those in attendance gained valuable information while having time to network with others in the hardwood industry from throughout the country.  KFIA is pleased to announce that the 2017 Annual Meeting will be in Lexington, KY at the Embassy Suites on April 4-6. 

     KFIA is a trade association dedicated to serving and promoting the forest products industry of Kentucky.  Founded in 1965, it has over 600 members in the areas of primary and secondary wood industry, supplier and service industries, wholesale, loggers and landowners.  KFIA promotes sound forest management through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
